TobyMac’s song “Faithfully” and the accompanying official music video describe and depict the artist’s process of grieving and writing about the tremendous personal loss he and his family experienced in October 2019.

Many of us look back at the disappointments and joys over the course of a year as we begin a new one. However, absolutely nothing marks a year forever like a tragedy or the loss of a loved one, particularly a child.

“Faithfully,” included on TobyMac’s August 2022 album Life After Death, deals with the devastation that loss creates in a person’s life as well as the recognition that God is with us through it all. TobyMac experienced that devastation in the worst possible way when his 19-year-old son, Truett Foster McKeehan, died of an accidental drug overdose. 

TobyMac shared with Movieguide, “The truth is, I didn’t know grief, really. I just felt like everything was beautiful and perfect until the last few years. And then, when we lost Truett, everything changed, and I met grief in the fiercest way.”

The video begins as TobyMac sits down to do an interview; he seems to be preparing to share his story of loss. Then, we see him writing and composing in a studio and on what appears to be his tour bus. He writes key phrases and doodles with his Bible nearby, eventually creating the verses and chorus of a song that demonstrates healing—possible only through His quiet, gentle, transformative love.    

The new version of “Faithfully” was released as a single in September 2023. TobyMac wrote in an Instagram post about the new version, “The main difference in the recording is that the bridge is musically more driving and sung an octave higher with more intensity and passion.” The bridge begins at 1:50.  

As the song closes, the singer-songwriter emerges from inside the studio/bus into the sunshine of a new, brighter day. 

As we close out one year, whether it be filled with sorrow and trials or triumph and success, may we do so knowing that God is faithfully there through it all.

Brooke Ligertwood is joined by Martin Smith in this official music video of “Lead Me To The Cross,” and the pair deliver an encouraging, soothing, and stirring reminder that joy is found only through connection with Christ.

In the process of sharing their message, Brooke and Martin also share an inside look at a day in the life of Christian music recording artists. A singer, songwriter, worship leader, and producer,  Brooke is the writer of “Lead Me To The Cross,” as well as so many other faith-filled songs. 

She is originally from New Zealand. Born in England, Martin Smith is a Christian singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer, and frontman for the group Delirious?, which performed together from 1992-2009 and was formerly known as The Cutting Edge Band. 

The video begins as the two are greeted and enter a building with bottled water, papers, phones, and bags in their hands. Soon, we are taken into the recording space where Brooke and Martin stand opposite one another in front of microphones; lighting, speakers, drapes, and rose-colored carpet set the acoustic stage. They chat, laugh, and mentally prepare until the musical magic begins at .30. 

Dressed in a dark suit and a pink t-shirt, Martin calmly conveys the first perfect words, “Savior, I come.” He smiles and raises his hands at times, singing with absolute contentment about redemption and ransom as Brooke prepares to join in at 1:55. She is dressed in gray and closes her eyes as she looks up and sings. Her innermost desire is to be brought more closely to Jesus—led to the cross.

The video is often framed by a rather formal, floral wallpaper, and periodically, flashes of Brooke and Martin side-by-side or individually pop in multiples onto the screen. It seems like a combination of modern and old-fashioned elements, and the result is visibly pleasing—pretty and joyful. 

And, joyful is exactly how the singers appear when they pick up the tempo slightly and begin to finish the song at 3:15. Their smiles express the delight in their hearts!

As the song draws to a close, we see Brooke and Martin leave the studio and return to the streets. They walk quickly and discuss the work of the day, and when the camera pans out to show the entire cityscape, we see in view a beautiful ocean…and a tall, white, beautiful cross.

A musically gifted young woman, Sarah Reeves, demonstrated her unbelievable vocal skills by singing an emotional but very different Christmas tune.

Christmas, most people will wholeheartedly agree, is the best time of the entire year. It’s a season filled with family, friends, food and gifts. It’s easy to enjoy and get caught up in the season with all that goes on in the days and weeks leading up to Dec. 25. But for some, Christmas can be an extremely difficult and depressing time of year. 

In a clip posted on YouTube, Sarah Reeves sings a song that reminds us that, for those who have experienced loss throughout the year, Christmas can serve as a sad, distressing and painful reminder. 

“I should cherish the noise
I should feel the joy
But here I am holding back tears
‘Cause Christmas feels different this year”

Not only are the lyrics likely to cause listeners to react emotionally, but the official video for Sarah’s song is sure to evoke a similar response. The video begins with Sarah, wearing a green, festive dress, standing and peering longingly out a window. It’s clear that she’s waiting for someone, but they are more than likely not coming. 

Sarah continues to decorate a tree by herself, placing ornaments on the tree that is sitting in the corner of the room. Then, in what is the most heartbreaking visual of the entire clip, Sarah sits at a table by herself with two empty chairs. 

In a post on social media, Sarah wrote how the song is about a loss in her life, what she felt during that following Christmas season and what she hopes to achieve with her tune.

“The Christmas after my divorce, I remember feeling sad, lonely and honestly ready for it to be over,” Sarah writes. “I love Christmas and the holidays, but I know for many it brings up the loss we’ve experienced. Even though this is not a typical happy Christmas song, I hope it reminds you that you aren’t alone this year.”

What a great song that tells the story of Noah and his ark. Colton Dixon shared how the courage in Noah’s story inspired him to write ‘Build A Boat.’

“When Noah was telling people, ‘Hey, God spoke to me and said that a flood was coming,’ there’s no way people in their right mind took him seriously,” Colton Dixon explained. “How often do we let other people dictate our future? We believe what they say more than what God says.”

He continued: “‘Build a Boat’ is an anthem for anyone willing to stand up or step out for what they believe in. Just as Noah stepped out to construct an ark in the middle of a drought, faith can look a little crazy sometimes. I hope this song encourages you to go beyond what’s comfortable to experience the reward waiting on the other side of crazy faith.”

The song ‘Build A Boat’ already has over 2 million streams online, and Colton Dixon played the song for his Grand Ole Opry debut.

We hope that you were encouraged today by listening to ‘Build A Boat,’ and may it remind you to step out in faith when God places something on your heart.

These two songs go back to my childhood and teenage years. I am even more blessed by them today.
