A Not So Ordinary Farm

Since I could remember, and possibly in utero, I bonded with fur.

Anything with fur: a stuffed animal, a dog, a poor, unsuspecting coat of my mom’s.  (Sorry, PETA…I am so over that now, and I apologize). 

Give me an animal, and I will love it.   My hamster, Harriet, my kids’ guinea pig, Spike, my dogs…all of them…a whole life’s worth.

So, send me to a rescue farm and I will go vegan. 

Samrock Farms in Howell, NJ opened my already ½ opened eyes to the gorgeous heart of a trusting animal.   Chickens, horses, donkeys, cows, oh the beautiful cows, rescued from slaughter by owners Jules and Angel, are a reminder of the simple love and empathy each creature of God needs.

I got hugs from everyone…not just Jules and Angel, but Spirit the donkey, Shortrib the Cow, Jersey the horse and their roommates.   Lucy the goat baaaahed her orders at me from a top her tent.

Samrock is suffering, however, at the hands of local bureaucracy.   Jules and Angel pride themselves on creating farm space for special needs children all whom have benefitted from their love and generosity over the years.

The farm has also been home to consistent camp programs teaching children about animals, their care and loving hearts.   But, Howell Township doesn’t see it that way.

This Jersey girl has seen farmland, from south to North, gobbled up by towns to create revenue by building concrete, and urbanizing what is left of the Garden State.     It seems Howell wants to run the same scenario by Samrock to inhale the farm’s five acres which runs buttressed to another multi-acre property being pushed for development.

The cries of Howell township are that Jules and Angel are indeed running a school…not a camp nor not for profit special needs program.   Here’s the hook to pressure a shut down.   Jules and Angel have been feverishly fighting this lore, and you can read all about it right here.

I will be working with Jules and Angels, the cows, the horses, the donkeys, the chickens and all the creatures of Samrock to fundraise so they can once again run their farm not only for their fur babies, for those who love them, and for those who need to learn more about them with open hearts and open minds.
