Joe Rogan Opens Up about Church Visits: It’s ‘Fascinating to Me’

The most popular podcast host in America says he’s going to church – and genuinely enjoys it. Host Joe Rogan said as much on his Joe Rogan Experience podcast last week, saying his time visiting a local congregation has been thought-provoking and inspiring as he considers the claims of Christ.

It wasn’t the first time Rogan has discussed his churchgoing habits on his podcast, but it was one of the rare times he went into detail about his own spiritual beliefs.

“It's a bunch of people that are going [to church] to try to make their lives better,” he said during the Oct. 22 episode. “They're trying to be a better person.”

“At least [at] the place that I go to – they read and analyze passages in the Bible.”

Rogan pushed back on the common secular claim that biblical stories are mere mythology – and that affirming Scripture is tantamount to embracing fairy tales.

“I'm really interested in what these people were trying to say, because I don't think it's nothing,” he said of the biblical authors.

“There's a lot of like, atheists and secular people that just like to dismiss Christianity as being foolish. You know, ‘It's just fairy tales.’ I hear that amongst self-professed, intelligent people – like, ‘It's a fairy tale.’

“[But] I don't know if that's true. I think there's more to it. I think it's history, but I think it's a confusing history. It's a confusing history because it was a long time ago, and it's people telling things in an oral tradition and writing things down in a language that you don't understand in the context of a culture that you don't understand. And I think there's something to what they're saying – I don't think it's nothing. I think there's something to it, and there's a reason why it resonates with people.”

His comments come as a new film, Oracles of God: The Story of the New Testament (in theaters Nov. 2, 3, and 5), explores how the New Testament developed. It was produced by CBN FilmsRogan then turned the conversation to Jesus.

“And Christianity, in particular, is the most fascinating to me, because there's this one person that everybody agrees existed, that somehow or another had the best plan for how human beings should interact with each other and behave – and was the best example of it, and even died in a non-violent [way]. Like, he didn't even protest – died on the cross, supposedly for our sins. Like, it's a fascinating story.”

Rogan has discussed matters of faith frequently on his podcast in recent years. In May, he questioned the Big Bang and said, “Jesus makes more sense.” Months earlier, he hosted Christian apologist Wesley Huff for a deep dive into theology and archaeology. Each episode of The Joe Rogan Experience has an estimated audience of more than 11 million.
