U.S. House Chaplain Patrick Conroy’s sudden departure has sparked anger on Capitol Hill as Conroy’s own resignation announcement stated that it was done at the request of House Speaker Paul Ryan.

The Hill reports sources say Conroy was told that he must retire or that he would be dismissed.

Democrats claim that Ryan pushed Conroy out because he appeared to be “aligned with Democrats” and was critical of the GOP tax cut bill while offering a recent opening prayer.

In it, Conroy prayed that lawmakers’ efforts “guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws.”

A senior GOP aide said Conroy’s exit “was not because of any particular prayer."
