Federal prosecutors charged a Missouri man on Tuesday with allegedly sharing instructional bomb-making videos on social media, which were eventually used by the man who killed 14 people and injured dozens in New Orleans on New Year's Day in 2025. Investigators believe Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who drove a pickup truck down Bourbon Street, downloaded the tutorials and put improvised explosive devices consistent with the videos near the attack, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Matthew Price. Jabbar exited his vehicle wearing a ballistic vest and fired at officers who returned fire and killed him. The explosives didn’t detonate and were safely removed by law enforcement after the attack. Prosecutors also said the instructional videos were used before an explosion earlier this month at a private residence in Odessa, Missouri. An attorney wasn't listed for the man charged with making the videos. The man is charged with one count of distributing information relating to manufacturing explosives. He is also accused of making and possessing explosive devices without a license. He is facing up two 10-year sentences and one 20-year sentence in prison if convicted.

May 13 (Reuters) - South Carolina's highest court on Wednesday overturned the murder conviction of former lawyer Richard "Alex" Murdaugh, who was serving two consecutive life sentences for allegedly shooting his wife and 22-year-old son dead in June 2021. The state's supreme court ruled Murdaugh's 2023 trial was marred by the “improper” influence of county clerk Becky Hill. The decision followed a February request by Murdaugh's attorney for a new trial. “Although we are aware of the time, money, and effort expended for this lengthy trial, we have no choice but to reverse the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial due to Hill’s improper external influences on the jury and remand for a new trial,” the five justices wrote in their unanimous decision. In court filings, Murdaugh's lawyers argued he deserved a new trial based on alleged jury tampering and prosecutorial errors during the investigation and trial. Murdaugh is from an influential legal family in an area west of Charleston. His case drew nationwide interest given his political power and the nature of the violent crime involving his family members. He will remain in state prison, where he is serving a 27-year sentence for financial crimes. South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said his office would seek to retry Murdaugh as soon as possible. "No one is above the law," Wilson said in a statement.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — A U.S. Air Force training jet crashed Tuesday in west Alabama with both pilots ejecting safely, military officials said. Military officials said a T-38 Talon II aircraft from Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi was involved in a “mishap” at noon. “The cause of the mishap is currently unknown and will be investigated by a Safety Investigation Board,” according to a news release from base officials. The public affairs office at the Columbus Air Force Base said it could not provide information about the condition of the pilots other than to say they safely ejected. The base is home to the 14th Flying Training Wing, which trains pilots on a variety of aircraft. The T-38 Talon is a supersonic jet trainer.

Health officials say three passengers have died in the outbreak, including a Dutch couple believed to have first been exposed to hantavirus during a trip through South America. A small plane crashed Tuesday in Bahamian waters about 80 miles (about 130 kilometers) off the coast of Florida and all 10 people aboard were rescued, officials in the Bahamas said. The pilot had declared an emergency and then communication with the aircraft was lost, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority in the Bahamas said in a media post. The U.S. Coast Guard and multiple Bahamian agencies were involved in the ensuring search and rescue. The U.S. Coast Guard launched a C-27 aircraft to look for the downed Beechcraft 300 King Air turboprop plane. The rescued passengers were brought in for medical evaluations, the Coast Guard said. The cause of the crash remains unknown.

(AP) — Denver airport workersl initially missed a security breach by a 41-year-old man who scaled an 8-foot perimeter fence and crossed a runway where he was hit and killed by a plane. Authorities said Tuesday that the man was intending to end his own life when he entered the airport and crossed a runway as a Frontier Airlines plane attempted to take off. The medical examiner said no note was immediately recovered. The collision sparked an engine fire, and the plane was evacuated after the cabin filled with smoke. Twelve passengers suffered minor injuries during the evacuation and five were taken to hospitals.

WASHINGTON, May 12 (Reuters) - The United States' war in Iran has ?cost $29 billion so far, a senior Pentagon official said on Tuesday, an increase of $4 billion from an estimate provided late last month. With just six months before midterm elections in which President Donald Trump's Republicans may face an uphill battle to keep their House majority, Democrats are riding high in public opinion polls as they attempt to link the war with cost of living issues. On April 29, the Pentagon said the war at that point had cost $25 billion. Jules Hurst, who is performing the duties of the ?comptroller, told lawmakers on Tuesday that the new cost included updated repair and replacement of equipment and operational costs. "The joint staff team and the comptroller team are constantly looking at that estimate," Hurst said. He was speaking alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine. It is unclear how the Pentagon arrived at the $29 billion figure. A source told Reuters in March that Trump's administration estimated the first six days of the war had cost at ?least $11.3 billion.
